PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative’s wholesale power supplier, hosted a Residential Energy Auditing Training Course in April for distribution member employees who assist members with residential energy use.
The three-day class, instructed by Harley Ryan of Sustainable Energy Containment, provided “practical, hands-on instructions to attendees to help them effectively evaluate a home’s energy usage and to communicate energy-efficiency recommendations to the end-use members,” says Mike Majors, member services coordinator.
Training topics included energy basics, energy math and conversions, how to interpret electric bills, heat transfer, energy conservation measures and performance of energy audits. Majors says attendees were also taught how to calculate the cost of operating household appliances like HVAC systems and water systems. The class was interactive, with attendees role-playing scenarios and dealing with questions that could arise during the course of a standard energy audit inside an end-use member’s home. Attendees received class materials at the conclusion of training.
Mike says the class is aimed at all levels of employees—from those new in the electric industry to more seasoned employees looking to advance their skills.
GCEC Energy Advisor Shannon Hill attended the course and says she was grateful for the opportunity to sharpen her skills. The training offered practical tools she can use when helping members better understand their energy use and identify ways to improve efficiency at home.
