GCEC employees train for fire safety
Fire safety starts with being prepared—and knowing what to do when an emergency happens.
As October brings Fire Prevention Week into focus, Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative employees recently put the principles of fire safety and prevention into practice during hands-on fire extinguisher training with Sean Collins and the team at Star Fire Extinguisher.
The training teaches employees how to use an extinguisher in a controlled environment. Rather than simply talking about what to do in the event of a fire, employees get to experience the process firsthand.
For GCEC, safety is an important part of the job every day. Our employees work in a variety of environments and face different hazards in the field, at our offices and in our facilities. Training helps ensure they are prepared to respond appropriately when something unexpected happens.
But fire safety isn’t just a workplace concern.
For our members, Fire Prevention Week is a good reminder to take a few minutes to think about fire safety at home. Make sure everyone in your household knows where your fire extinguishers are located and understands extinguishers are intended for small, contained fires—not fires that are spreading or producing heavy smoke. Everyone should know how to get out safely and when to call 911.
A fire can grow quickly, and knowing what to do before an emergency occurs can make all the difference.
The best response to a fire is always to get out, stay out and call 911 when the situation is beyond your ability to safely handle. Fire extinguisher training is a tool that can help people recognize a small fire and respond appropriately when conditions allow.
At GCEC, we’re committed to keeping our employees prepared and safe—and we encourage our members to do the same.
This Fire Prevention Week, take a few minutes to review your family’s fire escape plan, check your smoke alarms and make sure everyone knows what to do if a fire occurs.
A little preparation today can make a big difference when every second counts.
