President’s Message – October 2023

Jimmy Black

In today’s world, most of us don’t leave the front door unlocked. We protect our homes, loved ones and valuables with locks, alarms and other security measures. Cybersecurity is no different. It’s the practice of protecting other valuables such as your identity, banking and health records, and other sensitive information from digital attacks and theft.

In addition to pumpkin-spice lattes, crisper air and Halloween festivities, October is the time of year we recognize Cybersecurity Awareness Month. While taking necessary steps to protect our personal information is a year-round practice, at Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative, we use this time to share helpful cybersecurity reminders across our team of employees.

Given our increased reliance on internet-connected devices and gadgets, this month, I’d like to share a few cybersecurity tips and let you know how Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative is working to boost our own cybersecurity efforts.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security, suggests four ways to stay safe online:

  1. Multifactor authentication: For added protection, use MFA on your accounts where possible. This makes it tougher for bad actors to access your info, even if they know your password.
  2. Software updates: Keep your software secure by regularly downloading updates from trusted sources only. Better yet, turn on automatic updates. Beware of fake popups requesting immediate downloads.
  3. Think before you click: Be cautious with links. Many cyberattacks start with phishing emails. Don’t fall for emails or texts that seem too good to be true, require an urgent response, are poorly written or include unusual requests.
  4. Strong passwords: Create strong passwords using long, unique, complex words. Consider using a password manager to save time, protect your identity and warn you about potentially unsafe websites.

For the Young People in Your Home

Talk to children about online safety. Explain that once something’s online, it’s difficult—if not impossible—to take back. Teach them to protect their personal info, especially on social media. Help them understand privacy settings on social networks and gaming sites.

Securing the Power Grid and Your Data

Part of providing excellent electric service is keeping it safe and reliable. For PRECO, this means maintaining power lines, upgrading equipment and using technology for stronger cybersecurity.

While we can’t control everything, we work hard to keep the lights on and our members safe. Working together, we can make the online world better and safer for everyone.
